How to play Gomoku

Choose a round of Gomoku and settle into its rules. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Start with a deliberate move.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
