How to play Nonogram

Choose a round of Nonogram and settle into its rules. Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Work through a collection of twelve 5×5 picture puzzles.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Shade the grid so every row and column matches its run-length clues. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

Step by step

  1. Cycle a square between filled, crossed and blank.
  2. Keep separate runs apart by at least one blank.
  3. Combine row and column deductions.
  4. Check puzzle verifies the finished grid.

Controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

Clue 2 1 requires a run of two, a blank separator, and a run of one. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Keep the game’s format in mind.

Watch out for this

Do not merge two separate runs. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
