How to play Sokoban

Start Sokoban by looking at the playing area and its controls. Push every crate onto a target. Use the example below to understand a decision. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Notice the feedback

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your goal

Push every crate onto a target. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Step by step

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
